Why Telecel Chose Black Sherif: Inside the X Project Deal

On October 8, 2026, Telecel Ghana unveiled Black Sherif, popularly known as Blacko, as the face of its X Project. The announcement came at a launch event in Accra and ended weeks of speculation about what the campaign would be.
What the new role means
The partnership is built around Telecel Cash, the company's mobile money service. Telecel says it goes beyond a standard ambassador deal. Over the next year, Black Sherif is expected to help create experiences, events and surprise rewards for customers. Fans engage with him online, and unique "BlackoCodes" released during those engagements can unlock discounts, free transactions and other perks through the Telecel Play app. To take part, customers need a Telecel Cash wallet and the app. For Telecel, that turns a celebrity face into a way to get people onto its digital platforms.
Why he fits youth campaigns
Telecel CEO Patricia Obo-Nai described the pairing as two brands with strong youth appeal, linked by authenticity and resilience. The timing also helps. Black Sherif was the biggest winner at the 27th Telecel Ghana Music Awards in May, taking Artiste of the Year for the second time and five awards in total. His recent EP, "SUN SHERIF," also placed all six tracks in Apple Music Ghana's Top 14 in early September. He has the audience and the momentum, and he is active on TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram, which is where the BlackoCodes will appear.
How brand deals shape music careers
Deals like this show how much the business of music now depends on partnerships. Streaming and shows are only part of the income. A year-long campaign gives an artist steady visibility, a creative role and a stronger commercial profile, while the brand gets a trusted voice speaking directly to young customers. The risk is that the artist's credibility is tied to the product. Telecel appears aware of this, using the launch to remind customers never to share their passwords, PINs or passcodes with anyone claiming to represent the company.
The bottom line
The X Project is less about a famous face than about a long-term plan to drive digital financial inclusion among younger Ghanaians. If the BlackoCode rewards feel real to fans, the model could become a template for how Ghanaian artists and brands work together.
