Super Eagles new boys give fans something to smile about
The Super Eagles have found two new names for fans to watch after George Ilenikhena and Moses Usor made memorable debuts for Nigeria.
The pair helped Nigeria fight back from a goal down to beat Madagascar 2-1 in their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Uyo.
Ilenikhena got the first big moment.
With Nigeria trailing after Madagascar’s early goal, the young forward found the equaliser just before half-time after receiving a pass from Alex Iwobi. It was his first appearance for the senior national team and his first international goal.
Usor then completed the comeback after coming on as a substitute. The winger beat two defenders before firing into the net in the 65th minute to put Nigeria ahead.
For fans, the performance was encouraging because both players showed they could make an impact when the team needed fresh ideas in attack.
George Ilenikhena, in particular, quickly became one of the talking points around the team. The striker later described his first goal for Nigeria as a proud moment and said he hoped it would be the first of many for the Super Eagles.
The result also gave coach Eric Chelle more attacking options to consider as he continues to build his squad.
The Super Eagles latest campaign has not been without problems, especially after Nigeria later suffered a 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau. That result showed that there is still plenty of work to do, even after the positive start against Madagascar.
Still, the emergence of Ilenikhena and Usor gives supporters something to look forward to.
Their performances have added competition for places in the attack, while giving younger players in the squad a reason to believe they can also earn their chance.
For people following Nigeria football news, the bigger question now is whether the new faces can turn promising debuts into consistent performances.
Ilenikhena has already shown that he can score at international level, while Usor has demonstrated that he can bring energy and direct attacking play.
Neither player has been established as a regular yet, but their first appearances have certainly put them on the radar.
For Chelle, that could be one of the positives to take from the recent games. The Super Eagles still need better results and more consistency, but having new players pushing for places can only make the competition within the team stronger.
For Nigerian fans, that is reason enough to keep an eye on the two young attackers.
