Security agencies in Nigeria have arrested five suspected members of a criminal gang allegedly responsible for the abduction of 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members in Imo State. The arrests mark a significant development in the investigation into the kidnapping, which occurred on October 1, 2026. The operation involved operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), the military and the Nigeria Police Force. According to reports published on October 16, the suspects were apprehended during intelligence-led operations carried out between October 10 and 14 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and Aba South Local Government Area of Abia State. However, three other suspected gang members reportedly escaped during the operations with gunshot injuries. Security agencies have continued efforts to locate and arrest the fleeing suspects.

The incident occurred on October 1, when armed men attacked two buses conveying prospective corps members and other passengers along the Owerri–Onitsha Expressway near Umunoha, in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State.
The prospective corps members were travelling from Ibadan, Oyo State, to their designated orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states when the attackers intercepted the vehicles and took the victims away. The incident caused considerable anxiety among the victims' families and raised concerns about the safety of young Nigerians travelling to begin their national service. Following the attack, security agencies launched coordinated search-and-rescue operations to locate the abducted passengers and identify those responsible. The operation was complicated by reports that the kidnappers' hideout had been planted with improvised explosive devices, making it dangerous for security personnel to advance immediately.

On October 7, all 20 prospective corps members and another abducted person regained their freedom following a joint security operation at Amakohia-Ubi Village in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State. The rescued victims were taken to the DSS hospital in Owerri for medical examinations and necessary treatment. Their release brought relief to their families after nearly a week of uncertainty and fear. The successful rescue was attributed to collaboration among security agencies, intelligence gathering and sustained efforts to locate the victims. Authorities had earlier intensified operations after receiving information about the kidnappers' location.

The arrest of five suspects represents a further step towards identifying those allegedly involved in the abduction and dismantling the criminal network behind the attack. The reported escape of three other suspects, however, means that the investigation remains ongoing. Security agencies are expected to continue the manhunt and gather evidence to establish the individual roles of those arrested. It is important to emphasise that the agulit is es
Five suspected members of a criminal gang accused of abducting 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members in Imo State have been arrested in a joint security operation led by the Department of State Services (DSS), in collaboration with the military, police and other security operatives.

The suspects were apprehended in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and Abia State during intelligence-led operations conducted between October 10 and 14.

Three other suspects reportedly escaped with gunshot wounds, prompting a manhunt for the fleeing members of the gang.

The arrests followed the abduction of 20 prospective corps members along the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway in Imo State on October 1, 2026, while they were travelling from Ibadan, Oyo State, to their assigned NYSC orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states.

The gunmen attacked two buses conveying the prospective corps members and other passengers near Umunoha in the Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State.

The victims were rescued on October 7 during a joint security operation at Amakohia-Ubi Village in Owerri West Local Government Area of the state. They were subsequently taken to the DSS hospital in Owerri for medical attention and necessary checks.

During the search-and-rescue operation, the police had said their operatives located the kidnappers’ camp through drone surveillance but could not immediately advance because the location was reportedly planted with improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Security agencies later intensified efforts to reach the victims and secure their release.
The suspects were apprehended in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and Abia State during intelligence-led operations conducted between October 10 and 14.
TheCable reported that the corps members were abducted in the early hours of October 1 after gunmen attacked two 18-seater buses conveying passengers from Ibadan, Oyo state capital, and took them into the bush.
According to a video circulated on X, the victims were travelling to Akwa Ibom and Abia states in buses branded with the Abia state government logo when the attackers intercepted the vehicles.

Henry Okoye, police spokesperson in Imo, said the incident occurred at about 6:30am, adding that 10 victims were rescued immediately.

The abductors subsequently contacted the parents of the corps members, demanding a ransom of N1 billion and giving them 24 hours to pay for their children’s release.
The kidnappers later reduced The Nysc.
