How to register a business name in Nigeria in 2026

Registering a business name gives you legal recognition, lets you open a corporate bank account and makes it easier to win contracts. The process now runs almost entirely online through the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) portal.

What you need before you start

• A valid means of identification: NIN slip, international passport, driver's licence or voter's card
• A passport photograph and a scanned signature
• Two or three name options, in case your first choice is taken
• An email address and phone number you can access

Step 1: Check name availability

Create an account on the CAC portal and use the public search to confirm your proposed name is not already registered. Names that are too similar to existing businesses, or that suggest government affiliation, are usually rejected.

Step 2: Reserve the name

Submit the name for reservation and pay the fee. Approval typically comes within one to two working days.

Step 3: Complete the registration form

Fill in the proprietor details, business address and nature of business, upload your documents and pay the registration fee.

Step 4: Download your certificate

Once approved, your certificate and status report can be downloaded from your dashboard.

How much it costs

Fees change from time to time, so confirm the current amount on the CAC portal before paying. Avoid agents who charge far above the official fee without explaining what extra service they provide.
